Personal security of tourists

The security situation in the Mount Cameroon Region is in general safe for tourists. The biggest danger is caused by local transport driving very often without any speed or security limits. Tourists are not allowed to take pictures of military and governmental buildings. It is always advisable to ask for permission of a person the tourist want to take picture of.

Banking facilities

Buea has two banks namely: BICEC and AMITY BANK. BICEC is located near the Provincial Delegation of National Security and almost opposite the Buea Mountain Club.

Hours of work

BICEC: 8 am to 3:30 pm from Monday to Friday.

Amity Bank is located at the University of Buea.

Hospital & presence of basic medical assistance

There are basic medical services offered as well in Buea as Limbe. Buea has a Provincial hospital located at Long street, Small Soppo. Entrance into the hospital is opposite GMI. There is also a Provincial hospital in Limbe. Other private and public Health Centres are located in both towns. There are also two private clinics in Buea but very basic in comparison to Standards in developed countries. These can be recommended in case of emergency.

The first thing the tourists should remember is prevention against illnesses! It includes a properly equipped first aid kit, malaria prophylaxis, hygienic eating and living habits as well as carefully observations of the own health and early reaction in case of sickness suspicion.

Buea has five pharmacies:

  • Mountain Pharmacy located besides Bongo Square
  • Royal Pharmacy in Great Soppo at the main road
  • Enamen pharmacy Molyko,
  • Amazing pharmacy Molyko,
  • Salvation pharmacy in Bonduma

Vehicle transportation

Taxi: Buea is well served with taxis from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. After this time taxi becomes scarce. Normal taxi fare is 150 F CFA per drop. (Taxis could be hired for a higher cost depending on the Km and time covered). Mini busses deserve Douala, Limbe and Kumba from the car park at Mile 17. Cyber Cafes

Internet Cafés are very flourishing business in the Mount Cameroon Region and particularly in Buea. In Buea you can find many Cyber Cafés. Most of them are scattered along Molyko, University street, Great Soppo and Bonduma. The best ones we can recommend are:

  • NETOVATE (NetoV8), near MTN-Building, Molyko

  • NCC Data Center, opposite White House Restaurant, Clerk's Quater

  • IT Centre of the Presbyterian Church Centre Buea

Postage

The post office is located near the Treasury, a walking distance from the Delegation of National Education. A stamp charge within Cameroon is 125 F CFA. International stamp charge is 500 F CFA and above depending on the weight of the letter.

Telephone

In Buea there are many possibilities to call from one of the numerous private call-booths. These private call-booths offer you the possibility to call from a mobile or from a fixed phone (Camtel). The best method we can recommend is to come to Cameroon with a mobile (without Simlock) and to buy a SIM Card from MTN or ORANGE for 10.000 FCFA each (with 10.000 FCFA credit included).

A few larger stores exist:

  • Family Store near Buea Town Market
  • Markets at the Bongo square (towards the Meat place)
Open local markets for fruits and raw food are:
  • Great Soppo market on Tuesdays and Saturdays
  • Buea Town market on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
  • Muea Market on Thursdays and Sundays

Buea has not much of nightlife but there are few offers:
